December 14 – Appreciate. What’s the one thing you have come to appreciate most in the past year? How do you express gratitude for it? (Author: Victoria Klein)
I’ve come to appreciate love of all kinds: with my friends, my kids, my family. Jack’s death taught me that I was focusing too much on what would be happening in the future, or how to fix problems, or how to feel better and not enough on what was right in front of me. I am the first to admit I do not do this perfectly. But I try to show my appreciation by living in the moment, thanking people for their presence in my life, complimenting people on the things they do and say that bring joy into my life, and remembering to say — and show — I love you whenever the moment strikes.
In the movie Cookie’s Fortune, an older female character counsels a young girl that “love is a policy, not a feeling.” That has stuck with me ever since, though what it truly meant was something that escaped me until Jack died. (Yes, I’m a slow learner.) I try to remember that line from the movie. I try to show my gratitude for love — both given and received — by realizing it is a principle, a policy, and a guiding light.
