40 by 40

As if the 101 in 1,001 project weren’t enough… here’s my 40 by 40 list, starting the day I turned 38, which gives me two whole years to get it done. Some of it overlaps with the other list… but most of it doesn’t.

  1. Get a chest tattoo. 
  2. Audition for a play.
  3. Start a reading series.
  4. Adopt a dog.
  5. Sell everything I own (except truly meaningful things).
  6. Start over in a new apartment.
  7. Make sure that apartment has a formal dining room.
  8. Save 5% of my net income.
  9. Fall in love.
  10. Finish one of my books.
  11. Get that book published.
  12. Finish the Hayden Family Cookbook project.
  13. Get that cookbook published.
  14. Re-instate Whim Days with the boys.
  15. Go on a mid-week vacation by myself.
  16. Travel to Europe.
  17. Take a trapeze class. 
  18. Hire a cleaning service.
  19. Go on a road trip with the boys during holiday break.
  20. Take an Introduction to Judaism class.
  21. Do the Eat to Live plan for 30 days (at least).
  22. Grow my hair to the small of my back.
  23. Cut my hair to shoulder-length.
  24. Donate my hair to charity.
  25. Try bangs one more time.
  26. See Wilco live (at least once).
  27. Buy a decent camera.
  28. Do something that absolutely terrifies me (e.g., go to a Haunted House).
  29. Try speed-dating again.
  30. Wear red lipstick every day for a week.
  31. Get back into rape crisis volunteer work.
  32. Get on the board of a non-profit organization.
  33. Scavenger Hunt Day with the boys.
  34. Buy a new stereo system, including speakers and a turntable.
  35. Finish making my amends.
  36. Hire a laundry service.
  37. Become a “regular” at a salon.
  38. Discard or donate all shoes I don’t really like and don’t ever wear, even if they were expensive.
  39. Discard, donate or sell all non-original artwork in my home.
  40. Reframe all of the original artwork in my home.

  1. You’ve inspired me to start a new 101 in 1,001 for myself. I attempted it years ago, and now I think it’s time to start a new round.

    Did you know that libraries are now holding speed-dating events? My local library had one a couple weeks ago. Everyone brought their favorite book. A perfect twist for bookish types.
